McGuire — Rattan Refined
The California studio that gave rattan its authority.
McGuire was founded in San Francisco in 1948 by John McGuire. It became the definitive American voice in rattan furniture — not through volume, but through conviction. McGuire understood that rattan was not a casual material. In the right hands, it was precise, structural, and enduring.
The studio’s pieces were characterised by tight, considered construction. Rattan poles lashed with leather bindings — a McGuire signature — that gave each joint weight and intention. Frames that held their geometry. Surfaces that did not yield. Furniture that asked to be used, not admired from a distance.
The sofa sets, the flip-flap tables, the lounge chairs — each one resolved. Nothing decorative that did not also function. California modernism applied to a material the rest of America had not yet taken seriously.
McGuire took it seriously. The work shows it.
