The phrase appears on a great many product pages. Hand-fabricated. Handcrafted. Made by hand. It has become, through overuse, almost meaningless — a signal of premium intent rather than a description of process.
It is worth being specific about what hand-fabrication actually involves, because the specificity is the point.
In rattan construction, hand-fabrication begins with material selection. Rattan poles are graded by diameter, density, and straightness. The poles used for structural frames require different characteristics than the cane used for weaving. This selection is done by eye and by hand — there is no machine that does it reliably.
The frame is then shaped. Rattan bends under heat — a controlled application of steam or direct flame softens the fibre and allows it to be formed around a jig. The angle of the bend, the radius of the curve, the point at which the heat is applied — these are judgements made by the craftsperson in real time. A degree of difference in temperature or timing produces a different result.
Weaving follows. The pattern is set by the design, but the execution is entirely manual. Each strand is tensioned by hand. Consistency across a piece — and across an edition — depends entirely on the skill and attention of the weaver. There is no mechanical equivalent.
Finishing — sanding, sealing, any surface treatment — is also done by hand. The goal is to preserve the material’s natural variation while ensuring structural integrity. A good finish is almost invisible. A poor one announces itself immediately.
None of this is romantic. It is skilled technical work, developed over years, that produces results a machine cannot replicate. When a piece is described as hand-fabricated at Rattanology, that is what it means. The hands are specific. The skills are specific. The results are specific.
That is what the phrase should mean. It is worth holding manufacturers to it.
